Along with Sunday morning worship services, Skyridge provides a variety of other opportunities for people to become better acquainted and more fully involved in the life of the church. On occasion, we also join with other congregations for worship and a meal. Special annual events include:
There are a wide variety of opportunities for involvement. We welcome whatever talents people bring to share. Please contact the church office for more information on how to share your gifts with us. Some opportunities for involvement include:
The Service Discernment Committee leads the congregation in a calling out process toward creative sharing of individual gifts in the service of the church and world. It assists in training towards that goal. It helps the other Standing Committees find people to help in their assigned tasks and coordinates the use of volunteers. We welcome whatever talents people bring to share. The Outreach Committee facilitates Skyridge's wider justice, peacemaking and nonviolence work. Committee members collaborate with KNOW (Kalamazoo Nonviolent Opponents of War), coordinate a violent toy public witness and find ways to support conscientious objection efforts. This committee also coordinates community service, ecumenism and evangelism efforts within the church, community, Michigan District, the Church of the Brethren Denomination and wider Church. See the Outreach web page for a comprehensive list of outreach efforts. The Nurture of Spiritual Life Committee works closely with the pastor to plan worship and set goals for the spiritual nurture of the congregation. It arranges for someone to preach in the absence of the pastor. It arranges spiritual retreats. It plans celebrations around special events on the church calendar and in the lives of individuals in the congregation. It keeps in touch with inactive and out of town members. The Healing Team (a subcommittee) works at carrying out deaconing tasks. The Christian Education Committee plans and implements the educational activities for the church. This includes Sunday morning classes for children and adults, Spiritual Support Small Groups and on-going use of the library and information for visitors. The committee members also may assist with classes for new members. It sets policies and carries out training for all involved in child care and arranges for child supervision at all church events. It plans occassional special events for all ages involved in its program. The Pastoral Relations Committee acts as a liaison between the pastor and the congregation. Committee members offer nurture and support to the pastor, as well as receive, raise and resolve issues. The Stewards Committee oversees congregational resources of property (building and grounds), equipment and finances. It organizes and arranges Sunday morning hospitality and ushering. It also keeps a record of worship attendance. Other opportunities for leadership are Church Board Chair, Member at Large on the Church Board, Annual Conference Delegate, Michigan District Delegate and other district or denomination positions.
